Result

How to Use

  1. Enter the total sales amount the commission is calculated on.
  2. Enter the commission rate as a percentage.
  3. If you also earn a base pay alongside commission, enter it — leave it at 0 if commission is your only compensation.
  4. The result shows the commission earned, and your total compensation when a base pay is entered.

Formula

Commission
commission = sales_amount × commission_rate ÷ 100
Total compensation
total_compensation = commission + base_pay

Worked Example

$10,000 in sales at a 5% commission rate, plus a $2,000 base pay.

  1. Commission: $10,000 × 5 ÷ 100 = $500.00
  2. Total compensation: $500.00 + $2,000.00 = $2,500.00

Result: Commission: $500.00 / Base pay: $2,000.00 / Total compensation: $2,500.00

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator finds the commission earned on a sales amount at a given commission rate, and adds it to an optional base pay to show total compensation.

When to use it

Use it to check a commission payout, estimate earnings before closing a sale, or compare compensation across different commission structures.

What the result means

Commission is the sales-based portion of pay only. When a base pay is entered, total compensation is commission plus that base pay; at $0 base pay, only the commission line is shown since it's the same figure as total compensation.

Assumptions & limitations

This tool performs simple, flat-rate commission arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Real compensation plans often use tiered rates, quotas, draws, clawbacks, or caps that this tool does not model. It also does not classify a worker as an employee or independent contractor, or calculate tax withholding — those depend on your specific employment arrangement and jurisdiction, and Calcoryn does not provide employment, tax, or legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales commission?
Multiply the sales amount by the commission rate (as a decimal). $10,000 in sales at a 5% commission rate earns $500 in commission.
What is total compensation?
It's your commission plus any base pay or salary you also receive — the full amount you take home from both sources combined, not commission alone.
Does this account for taxes or employment status?
No — this tool only calculates gross commission and total compensation from the numbers you enter. It does not withhold tax or determine whether you're an employee or independent contractor, which affects how commission income is taxed.
