How to Use

  1. Choose whether you're adding VAT to a net amount, or removing VAT already included in a gross amount, from the options above the form.
  2. Enter the amount, and the VAT rate that applies — VAT rates vary by country and product category, so use the specific rate for your situation.
  3. The result shows the net amount, VAT amount, and gross amount, all clearly labeled.

Formula

Net to gross
vat = net × rate ÷ 100, gross = net + vat
Gross to net
net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100), vat = gross − net

Worked Example

A $100 net (VAT-exclusive) amount with a 20% VAT rate.

  1. VAT: $100 × 20 ÷ 100 = $20.00
  2. Gross: $100 + $20 = $120.00

Result: Net amount: $100.00 / VAT (20%): $20.00 / Gross amount: $120.00

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator adds VAT on top of a net (VAT-exclusive) amount, or works the other direction — extracting the net amount and VAT already included in a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, which is how prices are usually displayed in VAT jurisdictions.

When to use it

Use it to work out how much VAT is included in a price you've seen advertised, or to add VAT to a net price you're quoting or invoicing.

What the result means

Net is the amount before VAT, VAT is the tax amount itself, and gross is net plus VAT — the price a customer actually pays. The same three figures apply in both directions, just solved for a different one depending on what you already know.

Assumptions & limitations

The VAT rate field has no pre-filled default, because VAT rates vary by country (and often by product or service category within a country) and change over time — there is no single "the" VAT rate this tool assumes. Always use the actual rate that applies to your country and product; check your local tax authority if you're unsure. This tool performs the arithmetic only and does not provide tax, legal, or filing advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate VAT on a price?
Multiply the net (VAT-exclusive) amount by the VAT rate (as a decimal) to get the VAT amount, then add that to the net amount for the gross price. A $100 net amount at a 20% VAT rate has $20.00 in VAT and a $120.00 gross price.
How do I remove VAT from a price I already have?
Divide the gross (VAT-inclusive) amount by 1 plus the VAT rate (as a decimal) to get the net amount, then subtract that from the gross to get the VAT. This calculator's "Gross → Net" mode does this automatically.
Why isn't there a default VAT rate?
VAT rates differ by country and often by product or service category, and they change over time — pre-filling one rate would wrongly imply it applies everywhere. Enter the specific rate for your country and situation.
