Asphalt Calculator

Estimate asphalt volume from area and compacted thickness, with optional tonnage from the density of your actual asphalt mix.

Enter the paved area dimensions and required compacted thickness. Density is optional and should come from your supplier, mix design or product data when you need a tonnage estimate.

Result

How to Use

  1. Enter the length and width of the area to be paved and choose feet or meters.
  2. Enter the required compacted asphalt thickness from your project specification, contractor or pavement design.
  3. Optionally add an extra-material allowance for site variation, handling or ordering margin.
  4. If you need tonnage, enter the density for the actual asphalt mix from your supplier, approved mix design or product data and choose the matching density unit. Leave density blank if you only need volume.
  5. The result shows cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters. When density is provided, it also shows US short tons, pounds and metric tonnes.

Formula

Base volume
volume = length × width × compacted_thickness (after unit conversion)
With allowance
total_volume = volume × (1 + allowance_percentage ÷ 100)
Weight
weight = total_volume × asphalt_density

Worked Example

A 50 ft × 12 ft paved area with a compacted asphalt thickness of 3 inches.

  1. Convert the thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
  2. Volume: 50 ft × 12 ft × 0.25 ft = 150 ft³.
  3. Convert to cubic yards: 150 ÷ 27 ≈ 5.556 yd³.
  4. Convert to cubic meters: 150 ft³ ≈ 4.247 m³.

Result: Asphalt volume: about 5.556 yd³ / 150 ft³ / 4.247 m³

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator estimates the geometric volume of compacted asphalt needed for a rectangular paved area. If you provide the density of the specific asphalt mix, it also converts that volume into an estimated material weight and tonnage.

When to use it

Use it for driveways, parking areas, paths and similar rectangular paving jobs when you know the plan dimensions and specified compacted asphalt thickness.

What the result means

The volume is based on compacted in-place dimensions. Tonnage is only an estimate when density is supplied, because asphalt density varies with mix design and compaction.

Assumptions & limitations

The paved area is treated as a rectangular prism with uniform compacted thickness. This calculator does not determine pavement structural thickness, lift design, sub-base requirements, compaction factors, mix type or local specification compliance. It deliberately does not hard-code one asphalt density because different mixes and compaction states can have different densities. Use project specifications and supplier or approved mix data for the values you enter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much asphalt I need?
Multiply the paved length by width and compacted asphalt thickness after converting the dimensions to compatible units. This gives volume, which the calculator then displays in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters.
How do I calculate asphalt tons?
Tonnage requires both volume and material density. Enter the density from your asphalt supplier, approved mix design or product data and the calculator will estimate US short tons and metric tonnes.
Why is there no default asphalt density?
Asphalt density is not identical for every mix. Aggregate gradation, binder content, mix design and compaction affect density, so a universal hard-coded value can produce misleading tonnage. Use the density for the actual mix you plan to place.
Should I enter loose or compacted thickness?
Enter the required compacted in-place thickness from your project specification or contractor. The calculator estimates finished geometric volume and does not automatically apply a loose-to-compacted conversion factor.
Can I use this for an asphalt driveway?
Yes, for rectangular driveway quantity estimates when you know the driveway dimensions and required compacted asphalt thickness. Irregular shapes should be divided into simpler areas or measured separately.
