Concrete Block Calculator
Estimate concrete blocks for a wall from wall size, openings, block face dimensions, mortar joints and waste allowance.
How to Use
- Enter the wall length and height, then choose feet or meters.
- Enter the total area of doors, windows or other openings that should be excluded, or leave it at 0.
- Enter the visible face length and height of the exact concrete block or CMU you plan to use.
- The mortar-joint field starts at 0 so the calculator can run without assuming a universal joint size. Replace 0 with the actual joint thickness from your project drawings, product data or installer guidance when a mortar joint applies.
- Adjust the extra-material allowance for cuts, breakage and site conditions. Optionally enter blocks per pallet for a pallet estimate.
Formula
- Net wall area
- net_wall_area = wall_length × wall_height − openings_area
- Modular block area
- modular_area = (block_length + joint) × (block_height + joint)
- Base block count
- base_blocks = round up(net_wall_area ÷ modular_area)
- With allowance
- blocks_needed = round up(base_blocks × (1 + allowance ÷ 100))
Worked Example
A 20 ft × 8 ft wall using a block face of 15.625 in × 7.625 in with a 0.375 in mortar joint and 5% extra allowance.
- Wall area: 20 × 8 = 160 ft².
- With the stated joint, the modular face becomes 16 in × 8 in.
- One modular block covers about 0.889 ft².
- 160 ÷ 0.889 ≈ 180 blocks before extra allowance.
- With 5% extra allowance, round up to about 189 blocks.
Result: About 189 concrete blocks
About This Tool
What this tool does
This calculator estimates the number of concrete masonry units needed to cover a rectangular wall after subtracting openings and accounting for the block face dimensions, mortar-joint thickness and the extra-material percentage you enter.
When to use it
Use it for preliminary material quantity estimates for CMU, concrete-block or cinder-block walls when you know the wall dimensions and the actual block product dimensions.
What the result means
The block count is rounded up to a whole unit. The modular-rate line shows approximately how many blocks the entered block-and-joint module uses per square meter and square foot. If blocks per pallet is entered, the pallet quantity is rounded up as well.
Assumptions & limitations
The wall is treated as a single flat rectangle. This calculator uses only the block face dimensions and one mortar-joint thickness. It does not model wall thickness, bond pattern, corner blocks, half blocks, lintels, reinforcement, grout fill, control joints, structural design or local code requirements. Verify quantities against project drawings and the exact block supplier before purchasing.
