Tile Calculator

Calculate how many tiles you need from surface dimensions, tile size and waste allowance, with an optional box estimate.

Enter the rectangular surface size, tile dimensions and optional waste allowance. You can also enter tiles per box to estimate whole boxes.

How to Use

  1. Enter the rectangular floor or wall length and width, then choose feet or meters.
  2. If part of that rectangle will not be tiled, enter its total excluded area; otherwise leave it at 0.
  3. Enter the individual tile length and width and choose inches, centimeters or millimeters.
  4. Adjust the extra tile allowance to reflect cuts, breakage and layout complexity. The default shown is only an editable starting value, not a universal recommendation.
  5. Optionally enter the number of tiles per box if you want an estimated whole-box count.

Formula

Net surface area
net_area = surface_length × surface_width − excluded_area
Purchase area
purchase_area = net_area × (1 + waste_percentage ÷ 100)
Tile area
tile_area = tile_length × tile_width
Tile count
tiles = round up(purchase_area ÷ tile_area)

Worked Example

A 12 ft × 10 ft floor using 12 in × 12 in tiles with 10% extra allowance.

  1. Floor area: 12 × 10 = 120 ft².
  2. With 10% extra allowance: 120 × 1.10 = 132 ft².
  3. A 12 in × 12 in tile covers 1 ft².
  4. 132 ÷ 1 = 132 tiles.

Result: 132 tiles

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator estimates the number of whole tiles needed to cover a rectangular floor or wall after subtracting any excluded area and adding the extra-material percentage you choose.

When to use it

Use it for tile purchasing estimates for floors, shower walls, backsplashes or other rectangular surfaces when you know the surface dimensions and individual tile size.

What the result means

The tile count is rounded up to a whole tile because partial tiles still require purchasing a full tile. If tiles per box is entered, the box count is also rounded up to a whole box.

Assumptions & limitations

The surface is treated as one rectangle and tile coverage is based on the nominal tile face dimensions entered. This calculator does not model grout-joint width, diagonal/herringbone patterns, edge cuts, tile calibration, damaged tiles or manufacturer-specific carton coverage. Those factors can change real material needs, so verify against the product packaging and installation layout before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many tiles do I need for a floor?
Calculate the net floor area, add the extra material allowance you want for cuts and breakage, then divide by the area of one tile and round up. This calculator performs those steps automatically.
Does grout spacing change the result?
It can affect the exact layout. This calculator uses the nominal tile dimensions only and does not subtract or add grout-joint width, so detailed layouts should be checked against the actual tile and joint specification.
What should I enter for waste percentage?
Use the allowance appropriate to your layout, tile type, cuts and installer guidance. Straight simple layouts often need less extra material than diagonal or highly cut layouts. The calculator lets you choose the percentage instead of enforcing one universal value.
Can I calculate boxes instead of individual tiles?
Yes. Enter the number of tiles contained in one box and the calculator will round the required tile count up to the next whole box.
