Volume Converter
Convert instantly between metric, US and imperial (UK) volume units.
How to Use
- Enter a value and choose the unit you're converting from.
- Choose the unit you want to convert to — note that US and Imperial (UK) units with the same name are different sizes; pick the one that matches your recipe or source.
- The result updates instantly as you type — there's no Convert button to press.
- Use the swap button to reverse the conversion direction.
Formula
value_in_target_unit = value × (from_unit_to_liters ÷ to_unit_to_liters). Every unit converts through liters as the common base.
Worked Example
Convert 1 US gallon to liters.
- 1 US gallon equals exactly 231 cubic inches by US legal definition.
- 231 cubic inches × 0.0254³ meters per inch, cubed = 3.785411784 liters.
Result: 3.785412 L

About This Tool
What this tool does
Converts a volume value between metric units (milliliters, liters, cubic meters, cubic centimeters), US customary units (fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, gallons), and imperial/UK units (fluid ounces, pints, gallons) — plus cubic feet and cubic yards.
When to use it
Use it for cooking and recipe conversions, comparing container or tank sizes, or converting a shipped/quoted volume between systems.
What the result means
The result is the equivalent volume in the target unit. A US and an Imperial (UK) unit that share a name — fluid ounce, pint, gallon — are genuinely different sizes; this tool always labels which system a unit belongs to so the two are never confused.
Assumptions & limitations
US units use the exact US customary definitions (1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L exactly). Imperial (UK) units use the exact UK legal definition (1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L exactly, per the Weights and Measures Act 1985). Metric cubic units use the exact SI relationships (1 mL = 1 cm³ = 0.001 L exactly).
