Formula

value_in_target_unit = value × (from_unit_to_m2 ÷ to_unit_to_m2). Every unit converts through square meters as the common base.

Worked Example

Convert 1 acre to square meters.

  1. 1 acre equals exactly 4,840 square yards.
  2. 1 square yard equals exactly 0.83612736 square meters (0.9144² m).
  3. 4,840 × 0.83612736 = 4,046.8564224 square meters.

Result: 4,046.8564 m²

About This Tool

What this tool does

Converts an area value between metric units (square millimeters through square kilometers, plus hectares) and imperial/US units (square inches through square yards, plus acres).

When to use it

Use it for land and property measurements (acres, hectares), room or material area (square feet, square meters), or any other area figure that needs to move between metric and imperial.

What the result means

The result is the equivalent area in the target unit, rounded to a readable number of decimal places without losing meaningful precision.

Assumptions & limitations

Every imperial factor is derived from the exact 1959 international length definitions squared (e.g. 1 ft² = 0.3048² m² exactly), not a separately rounded area constant. The hectare (10,000 m²) and the international acre (4,046.8564224 m²) are both exact by their own definitions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in a square meter?
1 square meter equals approximately 10.7639 square feet.
How many acres are in a hectare?
1 hectare equals approximately 2.4711 acres.
Is a hectare the same as a square hectometer?
Yes — a hectare is exactly 100 m × 100 m = 10,000 m², which is the same as one square hectometer, though "hectare" is the name almost universally used in practice.
