How to Use

  1. Measure the room length and width, then choose feet or meters.
  2. Enter any floor area that will not receive flooring, such as a fixed cabinet footprint, or leave it at 0.
  3. Adjust the extra-material percentage for cuts, pattern matching and spare material. The value shown is only an editable starting point.
  4. Copy the coverage per package from the exact flooring box, product page or manufacturer specification and choose the matching area unit.
  5. Review the whole-package estimate, target coverage and actual coverage purchased after rounding.

Formula

Gross floor area
gross_area = room_length × room_width
Net floor area
net_area = gross_area − excluded_area
Target coverage
target_coverage = net_area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Packages needed
packages = round up(target_coverage ÷ coverage_per_package)
Purchased area
purchased_coverage = packages × coverage_per_package

Worked Example

A 15 ft × 12 ft room with 10% extra allowance and flooring sold in packages covering 22 ft² each.

  1. Room area: 15 × 12 = 180 ft².
  2. With 10% extra allowance: 180 × 1.10 = 198 ft².
  3. Packages: 198 ÷ 22 = 9.
  4. Purchased coverage: 9 × 22 = 198 ft².

Result: 9 flooring packages

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator estimates how many whole flooring packages are needed for a rectangular room using the measured floor area, an optional excluded area, the extra-material allowance you choose and the coverage stated on each package.

When to use it

Use it for laminate, vinyl plank, engineered wood and similar flooring products that are sold in packages with a stated square-foot or square-meter coverage.

What the result means

The package count is rounded up because flooring is generally purchased as complete packages. The result also shows the target coverage before package rounding and the total coverage contained in the whole packages you would buy.

Assumptions & limitations

The room is treated as a rectangle. The calculator does not model installation direction, plank layout, pattern repeat, expansion gaps, damaged boards, acclimation or manufacturer-specific installation rules. Use the coverage printed on the exact product package and choose an allowance appropriate for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I enter for coverage per package?
Use the area coverage printed on the exact flooring box, product specification or manufacturer page. Enter the total coverage of one full package, not the dimensions of a single plank.
Why does the calculator round up to a whole package?
Flooring is normally purchased as complete boxes or packages. If the calculation requires more than seven packages, even by a small amount, an eighth package is needed.
What does coverage above measured floor area mean?
It is the difference between the total coverage in the whole packages you would buy and the measured net floor area. It includes your selected allowance plus any additional coverage caused by rounding up to complete packages.
Is 10% extra flooring always correct?
No. The value shown is only an editable starting point. Room shape, plank dimensions, installation direction, pattern, cuts and installer or manufacturer guidance can change the appropriate allowance.
Can I use this for laminate, vinyl plank or engineered wood?
Yes, when the product is sold with an area coverage per package. Enter the coverage stated for the exact flooring product you plan to buy.
