Mulch Calculator

Calculate how much mulch you need in cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters, with an optional bag-count estimate.

Enter the bed dimensions and mulch depth. If you are buying bags, optionally enter the volume printed on one bag to estimate how many bags are needed.

How to Use

  1. Enter the length and width of the area you want to cover, then choose feet or meters.
  2. Enter the finished mulch depth and choose inches, centimeters, feet or meters.
  3. Optionally add an extra-material allowance if you want a margin above the exact geometric volume.
  4. If you are buying bags, enter the volume printed on one bag and choose the matching unit. Leave the bag-size field blank when ordering bulk mulch by volume.
  5. The result shows cubic yards, cubic feet and cubic meters. When a bag size is entered, it also rounds up to the number of whole bags required.

Formula

Base volume
volume = length × width × depth (after converting dimensions to compatible units)
With allowance
total_volume = volume × (1 + extra_percentage ÷ 100)
Bag count
bags = round up(total_volume ÷ volume_per_bag)

Worked Example

A 20 ft by 10 ft bed with 3 inches of mulch, using 2 ft³ bags.

  1. Convert depth: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
  2. Volume: 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 ft³.
  3. Convert to cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.852 yd³.
  4. Bag count: 50 ft³ ÷ 2 ft³ per bag = 25 bags.

Result: About 1.852 yd³ (50 ft³ / 1.416 m³), or 25 bags at 2 ft³ each.

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator finds the volume of mulch needed to cover a rectangular garden bed or landscaped area to a chosen finished depth, and can optionally translate that volume into a whole-bag count.

When to use it

Use it before buying bulk or bagged mulch for flower beds, tree rings, borders and other rectangular landscaping areas.

What the result means

The volume result is the amount of space the mulch layer occupies. Cubic yards are commonly used for bulk landscape material in the US, while cubic feet and cubic meters help compare with bag labels and metric suppliers. Bag count always rounds up because partial bags are not normally purchasable.

Assumptions & limitations

The area is modeled as a rectangular prism with a uniform finished depth. Curved or irregular beds should be split into simpler measured sections and added together. Mulch can settle after placement, and recommendations for the right mulch depth vary by material, plant type and site conditions; this calculator does not prescribe a depth. Bag sizes also vary, so no package size is assumed — enter the volume printed on the product you plan to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?
Multiply the bed length by width and mulch depth using compatible units, then convert the resulting volume to cubic yards. If your measurements are in feet, one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
How many bags of mulch do I need?
Enter the volume printed on one bag. The calculator divides your required mulch volume by that bag volume and rounds up to the next whole bag.
What mulch depth should I use?
The appropriate finished depth depends on the mulch material, plants, soil and landscaping goal. This calculator intentionally does not prescribe one; use the depth recommended for your specific project or product.
Can I use this for an irregular garden bed?
For a good estimate, divide an irregular bed into rectangles or other measurable sections, calculate each section separately, and add the required volumes together.
