Paver Calculator

Estimate how many pavers you need from paved area, paver dimensions, optional joint gap and extra-material allowance.

Enter the paved surface dimensions, any excluded area, the exact paver face dimensions, an optional joint gap and your extra-material allowance.

How to Use

  1. Enter the overall length and width of the patio, walkway, driveway section or other rectangular paved surface.
  2. If part of the rectangle will not be paved, enter that combined excluded area. Otherwise leave it at 0.
  3. Enter the face length and width of the exact paver product you plan to install. Do not assume one universal paver size.
  4. If your layout uses a regular joint gap, enter it. The field starts at 0 so the calculator does not assume a universal spacer or joint width.
  5. Choose any extra-material allowance you want for cuts, breakage, pattern complexity or spare pavers. Optionally enter the supplier pallet quantity for a pallet estimate.

Formula

Gross paved area
gross_area = surface_length × surface_width
Net paved area
net_area = gross_area − excluded_area
Paver module area
module_area = (paver_length + joint_gap) × (paver_width + joint_gap)
Base pavers
base_pavers = round up(net_area ÷ module_area)
With allowance
pavers_needed = round up(base_pavers × (1 + allowance ÷ 100))

Worked Example

A 20 ft × 12 ft rectangular patio using 12 in × 6 in pavers with no joint gap entered and 5% extra allowance.

  1. Paved area: 20 × 12 = 240 ft².
  2. Each 12 in × 6 in paver covers 0.5 ft² when no joint gap is entered.
  3. 240 ÷ 0.5 = 480 pavers before extra allowance.
  4. With 5% extra, round up to 504 pavers.

Result: About 504 pavers

About This Tool

What this tool does

This calculator estimates whole paver quantity for a rectangular paved surface using the actual paver face dimensions you enter. It can optionally include a regular joint gap, excluded area, extra-material allowance and supplier pallet count.

When to use it

Use it for early quantity estimates for patios, walkways, garden paths and rectangular driveway sections when you already know the intended paver product and paved dimensions.

What the result means

The result is a rounded whole-paver purchasing estimate. If you enter pavers per pallet, the calculator also estimates the number of whole pallets required.

Assumptions & limitations

The surface is modeled as one rectangle and each paver as one rectangular face module. Complex laying patterns, diagonal layouts, curves, borders, mixed paver sizes and actual cut reuse can change real consumption. The calculator does not estimate base aggregate, bedding sand, joint sand, edge restraint, excavation depth, drainage, compaction or structural pavement design. Verify final quantities against the product layout, drawings and supplier packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paver dimensions should I enter?
Enter the face length and width of the exact paver product you plan to install. Manufacturer dimensions vary, so using the actual product specification is more reliable than assuming a standard size.
Should I enter a joint gap?
Enter a joint gap only when your layout uses a regular spacing that you want included in the repeating module. The calculator starts at 0 because joint requirements vary by paver system and installation method.
How much extra should I add for cuts and waste?
There is no universal waste percentage. Straight rectangular layouts may need less extra material than diagonal, curved, bordered or complex patterns. Enter the allowance appropriate for your layout and installer guidance.
Does this calculate sand or gravel base?
No. This tool estimates paver quantity only. Bedding sand, joint sand, aggregate base, excavation and compaction depend on separate project specifications.
Can I estimate pallets?
Yes. Enter the actual number of pavers supplied per pallet and the calculator will round the required pavers up to a whole-pallet estimate.
